Happy Holidays

Although the pace of business has slowed the last couple of weeks it has been a good year thanks to many of you. We have seen an increase in both residential and commercial work. We are going to take turns spending some extended time with family and friends but Energy Calc Co. will be open between Christmas and New Year's day. Let us know if we can be of service.

Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and a great start to 2012!

Residential Ventilation

Since the beginning of last year new residences and additions > 1000 square feet have been required to meet mechanical ventilation requirements. This became necessary as buildings are built tighter and external factors such as noise cause homeowners to keep doors and windows shut. This requirement is most commonly met with local exhaust fans. The quantity of air required is derived from a formula based on the building size and number of bedrooms found on the Installation Certificate. Local exhaust fans can be assumed to operate continuously if they have a sone rating of 1.0 or less and have a statement (see example below) located at each control point indicating the importance of ventilation to maintain indoor air quality.

Example Statement- "To maintain minmum levels of outdoor air ventilation required for good health, the fan control should be on at all times the building is occupied, unless there is severe outdoor air contamination."

The Installation Certificate (CF-6R-MECH-05) should be completed and available for final inspection. You can find a link to a copy of the Installation Certificate in the Resources section of our website. Of course, when conditions are right natural ventilation can be the choice of the occupant with this approach.

Installation Certificate (CF-6R)

We have had many inquiries about building departments asking for the CF-6R form. The CF-6R form a.k.a "Installation Certificate" is not part of the documentation we provide for your permit submittal. The applicable parts of this many part form are to be posted at the building site to assist inspection. The responsible party for each applicable section signs the form to acknowledge that their portion of the project has been built to meet or beat the T24 requirements. For example, an insulation contractor would sign off on part CF-6R-ENV-01 to take responsibility for the R-value and type of insulation installed on the project. For the latest code cycle the Kitchen Lighting Worksheet was changed from a submittal form to a part of the Installation Certificate (CF-6R-LTG-01). Go to our "Resources" tab to find the link to the Energy Commission website where you can download the applicable portions of the CF-6R for your use.

Welcome to our new website

We hope you find our new website easier to work with and more informative. In the coming months we will be posting helpfull information and soliciting feedback from our client base. With so many "hoops" to jump through and different sets of requirements to be aware of it can only help to share our experiences and information as we move forward.
